BRIEF OVERVIEW OF SOME OF THE PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN
-
Aliwal North Waste Water System Upgrade Project (Eastern Cape) on behalf of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality, 2015 – 2017.
MCEC was responsible for compiling a number of EMPr’s for the four project phases as well as conducting and compiling monthly environmental audit reports. Working together with wetland ecologists and the DWS to ensure compliance with all aspects of the National Water Act was required. A major environmental pollution risk caused by the leaking of the aging infrastructure challenged the Client, Engineers and all role players involved in the project.
-
A new office development, Aliwal North, Eastern Cape, on behalf of the Department of Roads and Public Works (DRPW), 2016 - on going.
The Phase 1 construction of a four storey office block (7900m2 gross floor area), consisting of a ground, first, second and third floor office space for the DRPW and the Department of Agrarian Reform and Rural Development, is underway in Aliwal North. MCEC is undertaking monthly environmental audit reports, attending meetings and consulting as part of the project team.
· Phase 1 has a construction period of three years. It will comprise a four storey building which will be utilised by the DRPW and DRDAR.
· Phase 2 will be constructed thereafter, and will accommodate the District Department of Social
Development and Special Programmes as well as the Department of Health.
The project has been registered with the Green Building Council of South Africa and is aiming to achieve a four star rating for using efficient and sustainable design measures. MCEC has been working together with the Architects, Project Managers, various Engineers and other professionals to ensure the desired rating is achieved.
MCEC together with the Client and Contractor’s Occupational Health and Safety and Environment team, arranged a successful and informative on site Environmental Awareness Campaign aimed at local schools. Learners had the opportunity to explore first hand, the work undertaken during the construction phase of the development which is the largest of its kind the area.
